The Top 10 D-Sub Connectors
D-Sub connectors, also known as D-subminiature or DB connectors, are electrical connectors commonly used in communications. They consist of two or more parallel rows of pins (in male connectors) or holes (in female connectors). The name D-Sub comes from their characteristic D-shaped metal shield, which has two important functions: it provides mechanical strength and ensures correct orientation.
When D-Sub connectors were developed in the early 1950’s by Cannon, they were some of the smallest connectors for computer systems.
Although D-Sub connectors have been largely replaced by faster, smaller, and more efficient connection technologies, such as USB connectors, engineers still use them for a wide array of applications, because their enclosure contains screws or locks, which creates a solid mechanical connection. Additionally, their large number of contact pins allow for many wiring options, and they are inexpensive.
They can be found in medical and control devices, and are also used in telecommunications, computer design and aerospace.
During the last 6 months, SnapEDA’s users have searched and used thousands of D-Sub connectors in their designs. The most downloaded D-Sub connectors on SnapEDA are from TE Connectivity, Amphenol, NorComp and ASSMANN WSW Components. The number one D-Sub connector in our list is a 2-row, 68-position, right angle cable-to-board connector.
Some of the factors that engineers should consider when choosing the right connector for their needs are: the number of positions, the current and voltage rating, the spatial orientation, whether the connector is male or female (in case of both plugs and sockets), whether a SMD or a THT technology was used, and more.
Let’s take a look at the Top 10 D-Sub connectors on SnapEDA!

We designed the HD-78 female connector into our PLT to get more I/O test capabilities.
This standard 78-position D-Sub connector is made by TE, Amphenol, and others but we have found the most readily available stock from Harting.
