10 Terminal Blocks To Supercharge Your Next PCB Design

June 6, 2018The SnapEDA Team

Terminal blocks offer designers an easy and secure way to transmit data, signals, and power to your printed circuit board designs.  They’re built from an insulating frame and a clamping component. Terminal blocks serve as an effective method of connecting wires, whether it’s to ground them, secure multiple wires together, or provide communication between a device and a controller.

Although terminal blocks can be classified according to their device type and structure, there are some extra considerations that should be taken into account when selecting a terminal block for your design. These factors include:

  • Mounting type (DIN rail versus mounted on a PCB)
  • Type of connection (normally you will have either a screw-in or plug-in connection)
  • Orientation (45°, 90°, or 180°)
  • Number of positions
  • Nominal voltage and current (make sure that the terminal blocks meet the voltage and current that will flow throughout your PCB)
  • Wire gauge range
  • Screw torque

Among the most popular terminal blocks with hardware designers, you will find a TE Connectivity terminal block with a nominal current of 13.5 A, 300 V, 5.08 mm pitch. Also represented are terminal block connectors from Wago, Phoenix Contact, and Wurth Electronics. All of the symbols & footprints for these connectors are available for download on SnapEDA!
